River East House League Hockey

2020-21 House League Year End Report

This past hockey season, has been a season like no other. Although, the season was tripped up by the pandemic, we managed to accomplish some development for the players.

Unfortunately, the Development Camp started during the Code Orange of the public health order. It was quite a learning curve to go through the sanitizing, contact tracing, dressing room limits, and of course the social distancing. That was just off the ice. Players also had to practice social distancing on the ice. The instructors also had to wear face mask on and off the ice. Although, there was many rules to adhere to, players and parents adapted well.

I would like to thank Tim Juer and his instructors for being flexible with their procedures and drills in ensuring our young players were developing their hockey skills in a safe place. I would also like to thank the staff of ESP, the River East and Terry Sawchuk Arenas for their patience and flexibility for ensuring that the parents and players had a fun and safe environment.

No official hockey activities were allowed for most of the winter.

But, as the restrictions loosened in the later part of the winter, we were allowed to take part in outdoor practices and eventually in some indoor practices. Again, these came with stringent rules and strict player numbers with these activities.

I would like to thank the many coaching staff that offered to take other players from other teams and took advantage of these activities. A big thank you goes to Nolan Shortridge, who led the way by organizing and scheduling more than fifty teams. Without his dedication this would not have been possible.

At this time, I would like to thank the Executive members and Community Club leaders for their commitment to the hockey community. Although, there were not many hockey activities that happened during the season. Many meetings occurred and many tough decisions had to be made in the background.

Finally, a big thank you to the Coaching Staff and the parents of each team for their patience and understanding while going through this very tough year. Hopefully, by this fall we’ll experience a more normal season.

Have great summer and stay safe.

John Dela Cruz
Vice-President of House League
