Female A Hockey

2020-2021 Season Report

The 2020/2021 season was certainly one we will all remember. 192 girls attended evaluations with 11 teams formed across the U9 to U18 age brackets. Teams were able to get a handful of skates in before the lockdown came into effect and the season was cancelled.

Following the lockdown, 9 of the 11 teams chose to participate in the development skates being offered by REMHA. I would like to personally thank Nolan Shortridge for his time and dedication in bringing the development program to life.

The female program began the initial launch of two exciting new development partnerships with Vigier Hockey and Tailor Goaltending. These partnerships provide not only development sessions for our skaters and goaltenders, but also provide continuing education opportunities for our coaching staff, delivered during their regularly scheduled ice slots. These sessions were led by two strong female coaches – Jessica Stott (a division 1 University of Connecticut defensive graduate) and Justine McIntosh (a Saint Mary’s University goaltending graduate). Aside from the skill set these two coaches brought on the ice, they also gave our players access to high level female athletes which was very well received by the skaters on the ice. The theory of “if they see it, they will be it” was in full effect during these sessions.

We also took the opportunity to refresh the look of our jerseys and entered into a new partnership with Keener Jerseys. The refresh was designed to ensure that no player was forced to purchase new jerseys if they were not needed but provided an updated and professional jersey for those who needed a new set. We also introduced our online store for Eagles merchandise which was well received. Keener Jerseys will continue to be our jersey and clothing partner for the upcoming season.

Planning for the 2021/2022 season has already begun and we look forward to a new season that will see us back on the ice again. A new U11 Pathway program will be put in place with more details to follow from Hockey Manitoba.

I wanted to take this opportunity to again thank all the dedicated coaches and managers who navigated this unprecedented season with me. Our best laid plans were constantly changing and each of you pivoted and did what was needed for the betterment of your players. Skype meetings, online team workouts and individual ODR drills were commonplace. Coaches willingly merged teams together, took on new athletes and worked tirelessly during our development skates to ensure that every skater that wanted to be on the ice, had the opportunity to do so. I am so incredibly proud of how our program banded together.
