Message from the Referee-In-Chief
June 29th, 2009

WELCOME everyone, to the River East Minor Hockey Association – Officials Website. I want to strongly encourage all males and females living in River East area, to become involved in Officials program. It involves people who love the game of Ice Hockey and can be both challenging and exciting. It can be a part-time after school job, a means for physical & mental fitness; a way to stay involved in the game; and/or a way to give back to help kids in the community.

Referees must be a minimum of 13 years old in 2009 calendar year. They must attend a one day certification clinic (8 hrs). Level I referees are usually from 13 yrs old to 16 years old. We also have a 3 hour classroom session in January for first year officials. We arrange for an experienced referee (mentor) to be with them in their first few games. The only extra equipment (you already have shin pads, jock/jill, & skates) a ref requires is a black helmet with half visor, whistle, dark sweats/pants, and a referee jersey. It also should be noted that if an official shows dedication and responsibility of the program, River East Minor reimburses the clinic fee (approx $45) back to the official at end of hockey season. Level I officials start refereeing 7 & 8 yr old games.

Once a boy or girl is 16 yrs of age, he or she may be advanced to Level II and once they are 17 yrs old they can advance to Level III as long as they were certified at Level II for one complete year. An Adult that desires to start officiating will usually start at Level II certification and start working 12 yrs old and under games. Once proper skill level is required, anyone will move up to older aged hockey games. For more information on Referee Levels please refer to Hockey Manitoba website: hockeymanitoba.mb.ca.

New Things for 2009-2010
June 29th, 2009

Firstly, Mike Driver, the former Assistant Ref-In-Chief for 12 and Under program, has decided to take some time off and bring new energy into program. Mike has recruited Ms. Stacey Franklin to become new person in charge of 12 yr old and under program. Stacey can be reached at cell #232-6116 or email safranklin@mts.net .

River East Minor Hockey has arranged for all refs and Timekeepers in 12 yrs old and under program to be paid monthly not just twice a year.

Registration for Recertification Clinics is ON-LINE this year. Most officials should have received a letter from Hockey Manitoba giving details. Refer to Hockey Manitoba website: hockeymanitoba.mb.ca. Just follow the instructions and everyone should be able to register.

It should be noted that Hockey Manitoba is having “Level III Recertification clinics” at Sports Manitoba building at 200 Main Street. There will be three (3) larger (40-50 people) clinics there so register early. Remember, first come, first registered. Each clinic is only allowed 30 participants and will be taken of screen when full. Note – On Hockey Manitoba website, it states that there is a $25 Administration fee for anyone not registering Online. There is also a $25 fee for anyone changing clinic dates.
