Hockey Manitoba has produced a Frequently Asked Questions document (which is included below) for our members to help address questions and concerns relating to the cancellation of the 2019 - 2020 season as well as the cancellation of events and programs.

A-3. No, it only impacts participants who are registered through Hockey Canada and the Hockey Manitoba branch.

Q-4. Is the Hockey Manitoba office closed?

A-4. Yes, the Hockey Manitoba office is closed to the public effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020. All Hockey Manitoba staff can be reached via email. Click here for the Hockey Manitoba staff directory.

Q-5. Does the cancellation of the season mean our team cannot practice?

A-5. Yes. All practices are cancelled. All Hockey Canada sanctioned events have been cancelled for the 2019 - 2020 season.

Q-6. Which Hockey Manitoba programs are officially cancelled?

A-6. All Hockey Manitoba sanctioned programs and events are officially cancelled including but not limited to 2020 CCM Spring Break Goalie Camp, 2020 Hockey Manitoba Cup, 2020 Directors Cup Prospects program, 2020 Rising Stars Plus program, 2020 Female Peewee Prospects program, 2020 Program of Excellence Female U-16 Spring Camp and Top 40 Camp, 2020 Program of Excellence Female U-18 Spring Camp and Top 40 Camp, 2020 Program of Excellence Male U-16 Spring Camp and Top 40 Camp.

This refund will be processed directly to the credit card that was used for payment. If payment was made through an alternate method, a refund will be provided by cheque.

Q-9. Will the Program of Excellence be continued at a later date?

A-9. Based on how the situation with COVID-19 develops over the next few weeks we will continue to work on developing a new program structure in order to continue with the selection for the Male and Female Program of Excellence. Once a new program structure is put in place a new invitation process will be executed along with the registration process. Depending on the length of the disruption from COVID-19 the updated Program structure may include fewer athletes than the original invitation list for the Spring Selection Camps.

Q-10. Does this include private hockey programs, private spring hockey programs, and other non-sanction hockey leagues?

A-10. Private spring hockey programs and other non-sanctioned leagues operate outside of Hockey Manitoba’s bylaws and regulations. If they continue to operate, they would be doing so in isolation and without Hockey Canada Sanction and Insurance.

A-11. Yes, all associations that were hosting 2020 provincial championship tournaments that were cancelled will be given right-of-first-refusal to host in 2021 provided they are in compliance with the Hockey Manitoba Rules and Regulations.

Q-13. Will I be refunded for tournament sanctions and travel permits for any tournaments scheduled after March 13, 2020?

Q-14. How will this affect Hockey Manitoba scholarship applications?

A-14. The original application deadline for Hockey Manitoba Scholarships was April 1, 2020. Due to recent circumstances, we have extended the scholarship deadline to May 1, 2020. A transcript that includes your grades up to the end of the first semester of this school year will be accepted.

Q-15. Are members or MHA's allowed to continue to host meetings?

A-15. Hockey Canada strongly recommends that all meetings should be conducted remotely, and that they should also consider the advice of their provincial health authorities on public gatherings and social distancing but that the final decision is ultimately up to them. Hockey Manitoba is working diligently to address the concerns of our membership and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult period.

Thank you,

Hockey Manitoba

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Hockey Manitoba COVID-19 (coronavirus)
March 13th, 2020

Since yesterday's announcement by Hockey Canada confirming the cancellation of the 2019-2020 hockey season, a number of members have reached out to Hockey Manitoba seeking clarification to a variety of questions.

To reiterate what was sent out yesterday by Hockey Manitoba, all Hockey Manitoba sanctioned games and programs for the 2019-2020 hockey season have been cancelled.

This includes but is not limited to all hockey league games and practices from minor through to senior, the 2020 Hockey Manitoba Provincials, the 2020 Hockey Manitoba Cup, the 2020 TELUS Cup Western Regional Championship, the 2020 Esso Cup West Regional Championship, Hockey Manitoba's Program of Excellence Male U-16 and Female U-18/Female U-16 spring camps, Spring Break Goalie Camp, Director's Cup Prospects program, Female Peewee Prospects program and the Rising Stars Plus program, team wind-ups, off-ice training and team activities.

In order to reduce the number of phone calls and emails that Hockey Manitoba has received over the past two days, we will be producing a COVID-19 Question & Answer document which will be circulated next week to further update our membership on our previously scheduled programs and events.

Hockey Manitoba is working diligently to address the concerns of our membership and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this difficult period.

Thank You,
Hockey Manitoba

To All Members of Hockey Winnipeg
March 13th, 2020

Further to the communication from March 12, 2020, I would like to clarify some things for everyone.

While it is very unfortunate and disappointing that we are in this position, we have taken the direction from health authorities and our governing body, Hockey Canada along with Hockey Manitoba.

The balance of the Hockey Winnipeg 2019/2020 season is cancelled. This includes all sanctioned activities such as games, practices and off ice activities.

To be fair to everyone involved, unless a final playoff series was played to completion, there will be no champion declared in the category.

Everyone please stay healthy and safe! We will get past all of this and move forward with preparations for a new season!

Respectfully,
Chris Hall
President, Hockey Winnipeg

COVID 19 Update - Hockey Winnipeg
March 12th, 2020

Good Evening,

As per Hockey Canada and Hockey Manitoba, all sanctioned minor hockey activities for the foreseeable future have been cancelled.

I know that Hockey Winnipeg issued a statement just a few hours ago that we would continue to play but this situation hands changed rapidly and we will follow the direction of the National Organization as they are looking out for the safety of all players and volunteers nation-wide.

All games that are currently underway may be finished but any game that has not yet started will not be allowed to take place. Please let all participants know that Hockey Winnipeg is doing what has been determined best by Hockey Canada.

More information will follow tomorrow morning.

Regards,
Ian McArton
Executive Director, Hockey Winnipeg

COVID 19 Update - Hockey Winnipeg
March 12th, 2020

Good Afternoon,

Hockey Winnipeg is taking the threat of the COVID 19 Virus very seriously, however there are less than 100 reported cases in Canada and one diagnosed in Manitoba which was today.

We value the safety of our members and we will continue to monitor all developments related to the virus over the coming days.

Hockey Winnipeg is recommending the following protocols be followed at all hockey activities:

  • No hand shakes – gloves should remain on for “fist bumps” instead of hand shakes
  • No sharing of water bottles – bottles should be kept clean and not shared with others
  • No spitting at any time
  • If you are felling ill, please stay at home

Hockey Winnipeg is following the leadership and Guidance of Hockey Canada and Hockey Manitoba to ensure that we are taking the proper steps to facilitate our programs without endangering our members. This virus is not widespread in Manitoba and by taking the appropriate precautions and being aware the public should not be alarmed. We will be providing updates as more information becomes available to us.

At this point in time all Hockey Winnipeg Scheduled events will proceed as planned.

Regards,
Ian McArton
Executive Director, Hockey Winnipeg

Recreation Facilities at Risk of Closure
Feb 2nd, 2020

REMHA families, it is important we do not sit quietly on the permanent closure of Terry Sawchuk. This past season we had a reduction in hours due to the closure. Most of the hours were replaced by other city facilities that are in the same conversation and will be closed.

Going forward we need a facility, it’s time to reach out to the highest level, Mayor Brian Bowman. Please cc the councillors.

Mayor Brian Bowman
Deputy Mayor Markus Chambers
Acting Deputy Mayor Vivian Santos
Matt Allard
Scott Gillingham
Cindy Gilroy

  Families in River East
Feb 1st, 2020

Please be advised that the permanent closure of Terry Sawchuk will affect the needs of our Community Hockey Programs. This past season we have had less hours of ice to offer our families. Our families have had to travel further to obtain practice ice due to the closure.

In recent years Terry Sawchuk has received our tax dollars to put in new Boards, benches and glass. The city has also repaved the parking lot.

As you know, we can ill afford to go another season with any arena shut down in River East. Please contact your local area councillors and voice your opinion with regards to the permanent closure of Terry Sawchuk Arena and other recreation facilities across Winnipeg.

Jeff Browaty
Jason Schreyer

Sincerely,
REMHA President

  2019-2020 REMHA Hockey Tryouts
Oct 28th, 2019

The 2019-20 REMHA "A" Hockey evaluations are complete and teams have been finalized.

Thank you to the REMHA Executive volunteers, and to the Community Club representatives for making this years evaluations a success.

The implementation of the new evaluation went well. We were able to eliminate multiple hours of ice while still providing thorough, individual assessments, which allowed us to provide instructor driven development sessions and deliver more practice ice to teams in a timely manner.

We will be reviewing the new process and making the necessary alterations to further enhance the overall evaluation process.

I would like to thank the parents for being patient throughout the trial. We appreciate and value your questions, opinions, and concerns. We will take them into consideration when determining the next steps in moving forward with the new process and making sure it is streamlined, consistent, and transparent.

Finally, we would like to thank the volunteer team official staff that have come forward this season. Coaching and managing can sometimes be considered thankless positions. For this reason, we want you to know that we appreciate the time and commitment you have offered to the program. Without you, hockey would cease to exist in REMHA.

Good luck this season. Have fun, and be safe.
