Regular Season

River East had 43 teams participating in 23 different divisions from 8A1 through to 17A2 during this past 2010-2011 hockey season. There was no 15A3 or 17A3 divisions this year.

Congratulations to the following teams from River East Minor Hockey Association who won their respective divisions in regular season play:

  • River East Royals Black 10A1
  • River East Royals White 11A1
  • River East Royals Black 12A1
  • Gateway Flyers 12A3
  • Bronx Park Bruins15A2
  • River East Royals White 8A1 tied for first place in their division but lost on the tiebreaker

Playoffs

In the playoffs River East was only able to take home one city championship. Congratulations to the River East Royals 12A1 White team (placed 3rd in regular season) for taking home the PeeWee A1 City Championship. They beat Stonewall in the finals 2 games to none: 5-2 and 5-1.

Two other River East teams made it to the finals of the city championships in their divisions.

In PeeWee A3 division the Gateway Flyers 12A3 lost in a 3 game series to Tyndall Park. In the Minor Midget A2 division Bronx Park 15A2 lost to South Winnipeg in 4 games in their best of five series.

Honourable mentions goes to the Gateway Flyers 12A2 team who just missed making it to the city championship losing in the B side final to Fort Garry 4-6. Also the River East Royals 15A1 team made it to the B side semi-final losing to Roblin Park 3-5.

A special thanks goes to:

  • All of the team volunteers that have helped coach, manage, supervise their teams
  • The volunteers that help run evaluations at the beginning of the year and to the many age conveners and community club directors that help keep things running smoothly throughout the year
  • The officials of the game – who without - there would be no game

Thank you,

Rob Koop, A Director REMHA

River East Royals 12A1 White Win the City Championship!!!!
Apr
1st, 2011

The city playoffs began at the end of February with the opening match against Varsity View. The Royals won that game (5-1) and went on to defeat Transcona (5-0) and then River East Black (6-3) to find themselves in the finals of the A side. Stonewall was waiting for them and really gave the Royals an eye opener. Stonewall’s defense did not allow the Royals’ forwards to get any significant shots against their goalie, and their forwards passed the puck to score six goals against the Royals one. In the end, the Royals were sent to the B-side final to meet up against the Maples Monarchs.

Throughout the season, this matchup had always been unpredictable. The Royals and the Monarchs had met in 4 previous games, and for the most part, the Monarchs had been victorious. The Royals knew they would have to play the game of the season to move on. The game was very close, with goals coming from each team in close succession. But in the end, the Royals won the match with a 3-2 victory, allowing a rematch between Stonewall and River East White for the City Championships.
The best of three series began on Tuesday, March 15. Who knows what the coaches told their athletes, but they all understood that this was an incredible opportunity. Not many players can say that they have played in the city championships, and they wanted to get the most out of their experience. With a new game plan, the Royals scored the first goal of the game and took a very optimistic advance with a 4-0 score at the end of the second period. By the start of the third, the Stonewall team started to really come out and scored 2 quick goals. It was looking like things were about to change for the Royals when a beautiful snipe shot from Scott Mickoski gave the Royals a definite lead and final score of 5-2.

Thursday, March 17 was the next game. There was excitement in the air, and everyone was looking forward to a great game. Stonewall came out and played a much tighter game and by the end of the first period, the score was tied at 0. Then in the second period, Stonewalll scored the first goal. It was quickly answered by a fast play ending with a Colin Piché goal. With 15 seconds left in the second period Dane Coubrough found the puck in a goal mouth scramble and put in what would turn out to be the game winning goal. Three goals in 5 minutes to start the third by Brett Newton, Scott Micoski and Brandson Hein complete the 5 unanswered goal comeback.

The Royals won the series and the city championships!! Congratulations to the team and the coaches for an outstanding season.

  REMHA Female Hockey 2010-11 Review
Apr
1st, 2011

Female hockey in Winnipeg continues to grow with almost 1100 female players now participating in our programs. River East has seen the same growth levels with the past season being one of the most successful on record. River East and Lord Selkirk combine their female hockey programs with each area hosting teams. This past season we had a total of 9 teams with River East hosting 5 of these teams. The 2010/2011 season saw the return of the Novice level to the female hockey program. There were eight new all female 8 and under teams in the city with River East hosting a team out of East St. Paul. Congratulations to Sean Galagan and his coaching staff for the great work that they did in getting this program going. There has been a lot of interest in the Novice program and I expect that we will see 2 teams out of River East next year. The Atom A2 team was hosted out of Gateway and coached by Karie Cooke and her staff. Congratulations on a great season and for being a city finalist and bringing home the silver medals. The River East Royals Pee Wee A1 team was coached by Dale Hughesman and his staff. Congratulations to the team for a great season and for also making it to the city finals where they brought home the silver medals. Congratulations to the Pee Wee A2 team out of St. Andrews who finished 6th in the regular season and also made it to the city finals taking home the silver medals.

The River East Royals Bantam A1 team was coached by Bruno Zarrillo and his staff and they also made it to the city finals winning the silver medal. Congratulations on a great season. The Bantam AA team for our area is hosted out of Selkirk. The Selkirk Fishermen finished first in the regular season and made it to the city finals where they lost a hard fought final series to the St. Vital Victorias. Congratulations to the Fisherman Bantam AA team who won only one game the previous season and went from last to first this season. Congratulations also to Chelsea Court, Robin Thiessen and Justine McIntosh who made the Winnipeg Bantam Challenge team and will represent Winnipeg in the Provincial Tournament in April. The River East Royals Midget A1 was coached by Randy Allison and his staff. We saw a number of changes in the Midget program with the implementation of A1 and A2 divisions. The River East Marauders Midget AA program did not have enough players this past season which resulted in 6 players from River East playing for the PTHA Twins where they helped them to a second place finish. Next season will see even more changes with the implementation of a Provincial Regional League that will have 2 or 3 elite level Winnipeg teams participate in. Please continue to check the WMHA website for information and updates on this program.

In addition to the regular season games, the Hockey Winnipeg Female Council runs a number of programs to help develop players and coaches. This past season was the busiest ever with the following events being run by council: Novice and Atom Jamboree, Coaching clinics targeted at female team coaches, free goaltender development clinics for 12 and under players, Midget AA Provincial Showcase, Female All Star game, Bantam Challenge tryouts and provincial tournament, host of the Feamle Provincial Midget AA Championships and assisting with the Program of Excellence Provincial team tryouts.

Thanks again to all of the coaches, managers, parents and especially players for a great season. You represented your teams and River East well and I heard a lot of very positive things over the course of the season. Have a great summer and good luck next season.

Regards,
Tom Thomas
REMHA Female Hockey Director

  REMHA Female AA News
Aug 3th, 2010

Projected Midget AA registration numbers for the upcoming season are low through out the city. The WMHA Female Council has made a decision to go with 5 teams once again and ensure that all players who wish to try out for a Midget AA in the city get that opportunity. The RE Marauder program has the lowest numbers and we will not be able to field a team unless we are able to combine with another area. A decision has therefore been made to have all of the River East Midget AA players try out for the PTHA Twins team with the Lord Selkirk players trying out for the Winnipeg Titans team. These two areas are also short players so this will give our players a good opportunity to make the team.

All players from the REMHA area will still need to register for Midget AA during the registration evenings of September 2 and 9 at Gateway Recreation Centre from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. All RE players wishing to tryout for the Twins Midget AA team should also register for their fall 4X4 conditioning camp that will run from September 2-19 at the MTS Iceplex.

To register online you will need to go to www.twinsaahockey.com  .

Please feel free to contact me at thomas17@mts.net or by phone at 661-8814 if you have any questions.

  2010-2011 REMHA Female Director's Message
July
23rd, 2010

The Female Hockey Program in the River East Minor Hockey Association (REMHA) continues to grow and will see some exciting changes this season. One of the biggest changes is that we will now be offering a city wide Female Novice Program for players aged 8 and under. Those players who wish to play on an all female team should ensure that they register for female hockey during your club registration dates in late August and early September.

REMHA hosts female teams that play within the WMHA at the Novice (02,03,04), Atom (00,01), Pee Wee (98,99), Bantam (96,97), Midget (93,94,95) and Juvenile (92,91,90) age groups. We combine our female program with the Lord Selkirk Minor Hockey Association (LSMHA) and conduct joint tryouts for A1 and A2 teams at the Atom and Pee Wee levels and for AA, A1 and A2 teams at the Bantam and Midget levels.

The LSMHA hosts the Bantam AA Fishermen program and REMHA hosts the Midget AA Marauders program. All players must register at their home club prior to registering for Bantam or Midget AA tryouts.

Registration dates for the REMHA Midget AA Marauders will take place on

September 2 and 9 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Gateway Recreation Centre.

LSMHA Bantam AA registration and tryout dates will be posted on the REMHA and LSMHA website. Please check with your local club for club registration dates which will likely be on September 1 & 8 along with another date.

We are now accepting coaching applications for all teams for the 2010 – 2011 season.

If you require any information on the REMHA Female Program please contact Tom Thomas at thomas17@mts.net or by phone at 661-8814.

Yours in hockey,

  River East Annual General Meeting
June 6th, 2010

River East Minor Hockey Association held its Annual General Meeting at North Kildonan Community Centre on Sunday May 30th with 41 area residents in attendance. While this represented an increase over last years meeting this remains a very small percentage of the parents considering there were in excess of 1200 players registered this past season.

Elections resulted in several new Board members joining the Association Executive. We are pleased to welcome Steven Brennan, Andrew Koop, and Rob Koop as new Executive members while thanking outgoing members Lonny Kubas and Kelly Taylor who are leaving the Executive for their past contributions. A complete listing of the Executive is recorded under the Contacts heading.

The Association took the opportunity of the Annual Meeting to recognize the efforts of several individuals as follows:

Darryl Young Memorial Award – presented to a Bantam age player that has displayed dedication to his team, sportsmanship, maintains high academics, and volunteers in the Community.

River East Minor is pleased to announce Nicholas Paulley as this years recipient.

Coach of the Year – awarded to coaches that have been nominated by team members and parents as a role model for their dedication, and creation of a positive environment in the development of their team.

The Association was pleased to announce two deserving winners this past season, Dave Strick and Rob Jones.

Volunteer of the Year – awarded to an individual who has been a positive influence in the delivery of our program and has gone above and beyond the expectations of the Association.

This years winner was Lonny Kubas and we would take this opportunity to wish Lonny and his family all the best as they relocate to B.C.

One position on the Executive was not filled at the Annual Meeting and that was the position of Equipment Director. We are seeking any interested resident to take on the position which consists primarily of sizing teams for sweaters, purchasing and supplying teams with pucks, first aid kits etc. The bulk of the work in this position takes place latter September through October.

Please contact myself if you have an interest in serving the Association in this capacity.
