River East Royals 12A1 White Win City Championship!!

The city playoffs began at the end of February with the opening match against Varsity View. The Royals won that game (5-1) and went on to defeat Transcona (5-0) and then River East Black (6-3) to find themselves in the finals of the A side. Stonewall was waiting for them and really gave the Royals an eye opener. Stonewall’s defense did not allow the Royals’ forwards to get any significant shots against their goalie, and their forwards passed the puck to score six goals against the Royals one. In the end, the Royals were sent to the B-side final to meet up against the Maples Monarchs.

Throughout the season, this matchup had always been unpredictable. The Royals and the Monarchs had met in 4 previous games, and for the most part, the Monarchs had been victorious. The Royals knew they would have to play the game of the season to move on. The game was very close, with goals coming from each team in close succession. But in the end, the Royals won the match with a 3-2 victory, allowing a rematch between Stonewall and River East White for the City Championships.

The best of three series began on Tuesday, March 15. Who knows what the coaches told their athletes, but they all understood that this was an incredible opportunity. Not many players can say that they have played in the city championships, and they wanted to get the most out of their experience. With a new game plan, the Royals scored the first goal of the game and took a very optimistic advance with a 4-0 score at the end of the second period. By the start of the third, the Stonewall team started to really come out and scored 2 quick goals. It was looking like things were about to change for the Royals when a beautiful snipe shot from Scott Mickoski gave the Royals a definite lead and final score of 5-2.

Thursday, March 17 was the next game. There was excitement in the air, and everyone was looking forward to a great game. Stonewall came out and played a much tighter game and by the end of the first period, the score was tied at 0. Then in the second period, Stonewalll scored the first goal. It was quickly answered by a fast play ending with a Colin Piché goal. With 15 seconds left in the second period Dane Coubrough found the puck in a goal mouth scramble and put in what would turn out to be the game winning goal. Three goals in 5 minutes to start the third by Brett Newton, Scott Micoski and Brandson Hein complete the 5 unanswered goal comeback.

The Royals won the series and the city championships!!

Congratulations to the team and the coaches for an outstanding season.

River East Royals 12A1 White Win the Christmas Challenge!

The River East Royals Peewee team began their quest for another win on Thursday, December 23 when they played against the Maples Marauders. The 3PM start began with lots of speed. The Royals were dominant and scored the first goal. Zac Cardno was especially impressive on defense and merited team honors. In the end, despite being outshot 3-1, Maples did not back down and won the game with a score of 3-2.

On Monday, December 28, the boys came back to play and they did just that against Lorette. Although the opposition was quite tall and stately in their skates, this did not intimidate the Royals. They got a few quick goals and never looked back, winning the game 5-2. Liam Loeb was a welcomed addition to the team, having missed 2 games prior to the tournament. He was distinguished with the hardest working player of the game.

On December 29th, the Royals played the Dakota Lazers. Dakota presented great passing and a very good goaltending, but something clicked in the third period, and with 3 quick goals, beginning with Scott Mickoski, the Royals clinched second place in their pool. This would mean they would travel to Dakota Arena and meet up with the mighty MacDonald team. Cade Nixdorf was everywhere on the ice, and earned the hardest working player of the game.

The Royals and MacDonald had already met in a tough game earlier in the year at the Beausejour tournament, so they knew they would have to work hard for a win. Both teams passed well, skated hard and took many shots at the goalies. The Royals scored the first goal, but MacDonald quickly answered back. Then the Royals went ahead with another goal, and the second period ended with the Royals in the lead. The third period was tense with lots of great chances by both teams. Josh Smith was sensational between the pipes, and an empty net allowed the Royals to win the game to move on to the gold medal match. Brandson Hein was essential in getting the puck to the net, and was named the hardest working player of the game.

On Friday, December 31, there was excitement in the air. The two Royals teams had made it to the final. Both teams had beat one another in previous meetings, so it was guaranteed to be a very tough battle.

The River East Royals White team scored the first goal in the first 5 minutes of the game. It was a beauty by Rory Nein. With three minutes left in the period, Kyle Becker jumped into the play from his defensive position and finished off a beautiful 3 way passing play from Colin Piché and Justin Turman, by slipping in what would be the eventual game winner. Fifty seconds later, Dane Coubrough made it a 3 goal first period lead, with a laser shot from the top of the circle. The second period was full of intense moments. Alex Krosney was exceptionally sharp in net and did not allow the Royals Black to get into the game. Eventually, one puck did sneak in, but a great one man effort by Scott Mickoski on the power play made it 4-1 before the end of the second period. The third period did not let up in effort. All the players were working very hard in the corners, and lots of shots were taken. When the buzzer sounded at the end of the third period, 4-1 was be the final score as the Royals White team clinched the victory. Brandson Hein was named the player of the game, but in the end it was a superb team effort! Congratulations to Rory Nein for being named the Hardest Working Player of the tournament!

The 2010 Christmas Challenge was won by the River East Royals 12A1 White team. Great job players and coaches!!!

River East Royals 9A1 White Win Dyna-mite Cup!

After losing 1 game in the round robin play of the Dyna-mite Cup and placing 2nd in their division, the Royals narrowly defeated the St. Boniface White team in a hard fought semi-final game that saw the winner advance to the Gold medal game.

The Gold medal game against the Transcona Regents was an equally challenging game. A solid team effort starting with the stingy goaltending through the tough defence to a strong offence including 4 different goal scorers on 6 goals resulted in the Royals coming out victorious!

River East 12A1 White Gold Medalists in Beausejour!

The River East Royals 12A1 White team travelled to Beausejour over the weekend of November 12-14, 2010 for a very well organized Peewee tournament. Eight teams came to town, including teams from Kenora and Gimli, to play heads up, tough hockey.

To start things off, the Royals played against the Beausejour Peewee team in a tense morning game. The result was a 3-3 tie. Later that day, The Royals played against Macdonald, and really showed great teamwork. Great passes were made, and the boys were off to a quick lead. This allowed for a 5-3 win.

Sunday morning started off with a 9AM game against the St. Boniface Seals. The boys got three quick goals and there was no looking back. The game ended with a 6-2 win, which allowed the Royals to finish second in their pool.

The gold medal match began at 3:30PM. The Royals faced the hometown favorites, the Beausejour Peewees. Beausejour scored the first goal and set the tone for the game. The Royals needed to dig in their heels, and fight for every point. Dane Coubrough scored halfway through the first period and tied things up. There was no scoring in the second until Beausejour scored with 9 seconds left and took a 2-1 lead after 2 periods of play.

The third period began with another goal from Beausejour, and the Royals coaches really got on their athletes to keep their feet moving. Lots of great efforts were made, but Beausejour was still ahead.

Finally Travis Harder took a shot from the blue line, and Cade Nixdorf tipped it in. One goal separated the two teams. With minutes left, the Royals got into the Beausejour zone, and the third goal was scored by Dane Coubrough.

The teams went into a 5 minute overtime, and no goals were scored. So, the shootout began. Nine players took shots, but the goalies were tough. Finally, Liam Loeb, got a quick shot past the Beausejour goalie’s glove side. The Beausejour player was not able to get the next shot past Alex Krosney, and the 11th Royals shooter, Zac Cardno made no mistake. He scored the much needed second point.

The River East Royals 112A1 White team won the gold medal and the trophy. Well done boys and coaches.!!
