Congratulations to the Valley Garden Stars 13a2 for winning the city championship tonight at Eric Coy Arena. Playing the playoff series that wouldn’t end, the Stars outlasted the Dakota Lazers in Game 7 of a best-of-five city final with a 2-1 victory.

The series started with the first game tied 4-4 after four periods of play. VG won the next game 1-0 to take a 1-0 lead. Dakota won the next game to tie the series. The fourth game also ended in a draw, forcing what was to have been Game Five to be the tiebreaker, which Dakota won to go up 2-1. Valley Gardens came back to knot the series at 2-2 heading into Game 7 tonight. Valley Gardens opened the scoring and held on to a 1-0 lead from the middle of the first period to the start of the third, when they potted number two. Dakota scored with about five minutes left in the third on an odd goal, signalled well after the referee had blown the whistle. The Stars came back up the B-side after losing to the Lazers midway through the playoffs.

North Kildonan Cobras 9a2 win the Valley Gardens Tournament of Stars

Congratulations to the Cinderella story North Kildonan Cobras 9a2 team for winning the 2008 Valley Gardens Tournament of Stars.

After struggling in the round-robin, NK adopted a hard-work grinding approach, defeating the Valley Gardens Stars in the semi-final and moving on to face the powerhouse Fort Garry Falcons in the championship final. Winning the battles and backed by standout goalie Alex Krosney when they didn’t, the Cobras fought hard against a skilled Falcons attack. Fighting to a scoreless draw after one, the snakes struck first on a short-handed marker in the second. Fort Garry tied it up shortly after. It remained tied until there was 10 minutes left in the third when NK struck again. They potted their third goal shortly after. Krosney stood on his head to keep the Cobras in the game, turning back shot after shot from the powerful Falcons.

Final score: NK 3 Fort Garry 1.

The championship win was a magic moment for a team that has struggled in the regular season.
